How do you make money off of this site? Do studios pay you to include them?
I don't make any money off of this site. All donations go directly towards costs associated with running and promoting it: flyers, business cards, shorter URL, etc. I don't get kickbacks for promoting any studio, mat, or other website. My goal is to list all affordable yoga classes in Philly and let folks know about it. Believe it or not, I made this site simply because I care about everyone having access to yoga.
Isn't expensive yoga better? Isn't low-cost yoga, well, cheap?
There's a great misconception that the higher the cost, the higher quality the class. Every time you practice yoga, you're in charge of your own experience: you choose to you push yourself, honor your challenges, focus on your breath, allow your shoulders to move in and down your back, or really let go during savasana. The amount you pay at the door is irrelevant to what happens when you're on the mat.
How do I get started practicing yoga?
My recommendation is to find yourself a beginner's and/or gentle hatha class. Iyengar and Anusara style classes are also a good choice. Arrive early and let the instructor know that it's your first time at a yoga class and if you have any injuries. Wear clothes that feel comfortable to move in but are not so baggy that your whole form is hidden. Your instructor will want to be able to see what your body is doing. If anything hurts your joints, stop and let the teacher know. Focus on your own experience and avoid feeling competitive with other students. Most importantly, don't get frustrated! Yoga is really, really hard. It can be like learning a new language. I encourage you to go to a few classes before you make up your mind.

I'm a 25 year old yoga student, born and raised in the Philadelphia area. I've been practicing yoga for 2 years.
